An unexplained anomaly exists in that the designation 1-161 was used twice but there is no record of an 1-162! The 1-163-1 was the first 1-16 to have wing flaps. Earlier models had had ailerons that could be lowered simultaneously to act as flaps. It was similar to the tip 5 but the tail unit and undercarriage were also redesigned. The radio was also modified by being equipped with a mast aerial. Tests were started in April 1937 and over a thousand flights were made. As a result of these tests a decision was taken to fit flaps as standard starting with tip 10.

An 1-16 tip 5 fitted with an experimental aft-sliding canopy and modified windshield. 46 The 1-163-2 had larger flaps and an experimental oleo-pneumatic undercarriage retraction system but it was never flown. The 1-164-1 (1-165) was a prototype escort fighter and the first 1-16 to be given the M-25V engine. Two extra fuel tanks were fitted in the wings and it was subjected to many modifications.
