Proscenium Theatre In the contemporary theatre, the stage takes on various forms based on the relation­ ship of the audience to the stage. The most common form is the proscenium type of theatre, where the audience is arranged on one side of a raised stage area, divided by an implied “fourth wall” (Figure 2­2). The enclosed stage is visible to the audience through the proscenium opening. This allows for a more formal “presentation” of a play and, for the designers, a bit more control over what the audience can and cannot see.
