Example text

On various pretexts they all moved off, and Alice was soon left alone. ” she said to herself in a melancholy tone. “Nobody seems to like her, down here, and I’m sure she’s the best cat in the world! Oh, my dear Dinah! ” And here poor Alice began to cry again, for she felt very lonely and low-spirited. In a little while, however, she again heard a little pattering of footsteps in the distance, and she looked up eagerly, half hoping that the Mouse had changed his mind, and was coming back to finish his story.

F 3/29/01 2:55 PM Page 21 CliffsComplete Alice’s Adventrues in Wonderland began to get rather sleepy, and went on saying to herself, in a dreamy sort of way, “Do cats eat bats? ” for, you see, as she couldn’t answer either question, it didn’t much matter which way she put it. ” when suddenly, thump! thump! down she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall was over. Alice was not a bit hurt, and she jumped up on to her feet in a moment: she looked up, but it was all dark overhead; before her was another long passage, and the White Rabbit was still in sight, hurrying down it.

Alice disagrees, especially because the Lory does not reveal his age. The implication that age inherently transports wisdom or knowledge is an appeal for authority that does not necessarily exist. Whether or not the Lory or Alice is older is inconsequential in the long run, because age does not automatically impart experience or intelligence. The Mouse takes command of the situation, demanding that everyone sit down. He claims that he can make everyone dry by telling a story. This pun on the word dry—which can mean both “unwet” as well as “dull”—reveals the unreliability of language to convey precisely what the speaker intends; therein lies the humor.
